Melton Primary School No 430 - A Little History
Melton's original school was the State subsidised Combined Denominational School, which was opened on 17th May 1858 with an attendance of about thirty children.
In 1863, when Melton was a staging post for Cobb & Co. coaches, the school was declared a Common School and received its number – No 430.
In 1870, after twelve years on the creek flat, the school was transferred to the present site, where the pupils were accommodated in a single bluestone building, the cost of which was provided partly from local funds. Seven years later, a second bluestone building was added at a cost of two hundred and ninety seven pounds. Both of these historically significant structures are still being used for administrative purposes today.
In December 1922 a junior class as an adjunct to Melton State School, was held in Victoria Hall, Melton South. The older pupils had to travel to the Unitt Street school. Melton South school was opened in 1923, the same year that an additional brick building was added to Melton 430.
A wooden five roomed residence was built in 1919 for the Head Teacher. This was situated in the south-west corner of the school ground.
With the advent of reticulated water supply in 1963, and an influx of migrants, mostly from the United Kingdom, Melton's populations increased rapidly, as did the enrolment at Melton Primary School which grew to 830 in 1987 before Kurunjang Primary School was established.
Melton Primary School has a proud history and its culture and programs are based on a strong foundation of community spirit which should prevail long into the future.

1902 - 92 pupils.
Teacher, Mr. Thomas Lang.
Assistants, Mrs. M. T. Skinner, Miss. A. Cecil.
